SUMMARY:SAGE Political Power Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to change the law or create a new one? \nJoin us on March 13 for a practical\, hands-on workshop\, offered by Professor Jim Moore on the source and balance of political power. \nIn our democracy\, the source of power is you. The balance of power is shared across five levels of government – local\, regional\, state\, national and international. Each level of government has authority to address issues you care about\, but it’s often difficult to know which ones you should you approach and how to advance your political cause. \nDr. Moore is an expert on the structure of government and the levers of power to change existing laws and to create new ones. He is the Director of Political Outreach for the Tom McCall Center for Civic Engagement at Pacific University. He is also a renowned speaker and authority on politics and has been interviewed more than 7\,500 times for local and national media. \nDr. Moore will help us better understand our federalist structure of government. Using real\, contemporary political issues\, he will illustrate which governments have authority to address which social causes\, and help you identify where you might be most effective when you advocate for your cause. \nNote: Registration deadline is March 11 for this in-person event! \nAbout our speaker:\nDr. Moore serves as the Director of Political Outreach for the Tom McCall Center for Civic Engagement at Pacific University. He teaches a variety of courses at Pacific on local\, state\, national and international policy.

SUMMARY:Addressing Implicit Bias: Aligning our Work and Values
DESCRIPTION:Join us on September 23 for a thought-provoking presentation on how to understand and recognize the potential impacts of implicit biases on ourselves and our approaches to supporting social causes. \nImplicit biases are related to the ways in which people naturally process information about the world around them. Even so\, they can lead us to relate to others in ways that are inconsistent with our values\, such as by judging people based on their age\, ability\, social status\, culture\, gender\, language\, or race. \nDuring this live\, one-hour\, online presentation\, Professor Erik Girvan will draw on illustrations and lessons from social science research and a variety of work contexts to explain how having implicit bias is part of the human condition. Girvan will also describe practical and constructive approaches for reducing or eliminating the main ways that biases can prevent us from living up to our ideals. \nSAGE is pleased to sponsor this event through our Citizen Project\, our initiative to inspire\, support\, and equip people to work across differences to solve public problems. Special thanks to our co-sponsor: Classroom Law Project. \nFor lawyers who attend\, we are applying for 1 hour of MCLE Access to Justice credit. \nIf you have any trouble registering\, contact SAGE at Hello@WeAreSage.org or call 971-717-6570. We are happy to help! \nOur Featured Speaker\nProfessor Girvan has a law degree from Harvard University and a PhD in Psychology from the University of Minnesota. He teaches at the University of Oregon School of Law and is an academic expert in design\, implementation\, and evaluation of ways to increase equity in organizations\, as well as conflict and dispute resolution\, and experienced in civil litigation. Learn more about Professor Girvan and his work at: https://uonews.uoregon.edu/erik-girvan-school-law.

SUMMARY:Visiting SAGE on Finding Your Path Featuring Nicholas Kristof
DESCRIPTION:SAGE honored New York Times Columnist Nicholas Kristof as its 2014 Visiting SAGE speaker. Presenting to over 750 guests\, Mr. Kristof spoke about his new book\, A Path Appears\, which he co-authored with his wife\, Sheryl WuDunn. Kristof described meaningful and effective new ways to connect to causes that make a real difference—from helping those in our very own communities to helping people across the world. Kristof demonstrated how even small gifts given in the right ways can add up to the millions of drops that fill buckets and change lives. \nMr. Kristof is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winning author\, a celebrated columnist with The New York Times\, and an Oregonian. Recapping the event\, Ward Greene\, President of SAGE\, said “Kristof inspired us tonight with his message that we can all make a difference in the world by connecting to a cause larger than ourselves. SAGE is providing concrete opportunities for older adults to help younger and future generations\, right here in Oregon.” \nThe purpose of the Visiting SAGE program is to inspire people to find new pathways to civic leadership and service to strengthen our communities and to improve opportunity for coming generations. This year’s event was co-sponsored by Literary Arts\, and the reception was sponsored by Beneficial State Bank. Promotional sponsors included Coalition for a Livable Future\, Elders in Action\, Mercy Corps\, and World Affairs Council of Oregon. The Venue sponsor was First Congregational United Church of Christ.
