SUMMARY:Politics and Possibility: Talking Across Differences
DESCRIPTION:Join us on December 4th for a special community conversation about how we can talk—and work—together\, even when we don’t agree. \nOur national and state politics are so polarized that constructive problem-solving is often impossible. This fuels frustration and deepens the sense of division. Too often\, we forget that each of us has the power to shape a different story. This event will focus on how we got here and\, more importantly\, how we can build trust\, listen with respect\, and find common ground. Together\, we’ll explore practical ways to promote civil dialogue and strengthen community relationships. \nPanelists Jack Miller\, Rebecca Tweed\, and Wendy Willis are experienced in civic engagement. They will explore this issue and share their views on the state of political discourse in Oregon and nationwide. They’ll also have suggestions about how to have productive conversations across political lines. \nDoors open at 4:45 p.m. Event begins at 5:00 p.m. \nSpace is limited. \nClick Here to Register.\n\nMeet our Panelists:\n \nRebecca Tweed\nPresident of Tweed Strategies\, Rebecca Tweed is a top political strategist in Oregon and has worked on more than 90 political campaigns for local government\, legislative and statewide candidates\, plus county and statewide ballot measures. She is a regular contributor to KGW News in Portland providing political and electoral analysis. She currently serves on the Advisory Board for the Oregon State University Legislative Scholars Advisory Committee and is an advisory board member at the Wayne Morse Center for Law and Politics at the University of Oregon. \n\n  \n  \n \nWendy Willis\nWendy is the founding director of Oregon’s Kitchen Table\, a statewide engagement program of the National Policy Consensus Center\, designed to give every Oregonian an opportunity to participate in the decisions that affect them. Before joining NPCC\, Wendy was the Executive Director for City Club of Portland. She has also served as an Assistant Public Defender for the District of Oregon and a law clerk to Chief Justice Wallace P. Carson\, Jr.\, of the Oregon Supreme Court. Wendy is the author of two books of poems\, a book of essays\, and the co-author of a textbook on collaborative governance. Another textbook – Kitchen Table Democracy – is forthcoming\, and another book of poems is underway. You can also read Wendy’s episodic column\, “Democracy Pie\,” at The Fulcrum. Wendy graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown Law Center and holds a bachelor’s degree from Willamette University and an M.F.A. from the Rainier Writing Workshop at Pacific Lutheran University. \n  \n \nJack Miller\nDr. Jack Miller is an author\, professor\, speaker\, and podcaster who has been teaching and writing about politics for more than 30 years. He teaches American politics and political philosophy in the Hatfield School of Government at Portland State University and is the host and producer of three podcasts: The Pothole Problem\, which examines ways of looking at the world to cultivate a less frustrating and more satisfying relationship with politics; Two Ring Circus\, a podcast about Congress; and Applied Political Philosophy\, which explores political reform. His two novels — 1994\, a novel of politics (2019) and Invisible Empire (2020) — explore enduring political dynamics through the lens of historical fiction. His third novel\, The Silent Majority\, is planned for release. Video lectures and public performances are available on his YouTube channel. \n  \n \nBill Howe (event moderator)\nBill Howe has practiced law for 50 years\, which includes over 25 years devoted exclusively to family law with Gevurtz Menashe in Portland\, Oregon. Bill has also devoted significant time to family court reform. He has been appointed by two Governors and several Chief Justices thru the years to lead family law and court reform efforts. Bill currently serves on the Board of SAGE and was instrumental in launching the SAGE Citizen Project. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nJeff Gudman (event commentator)\nJeff serves as Treasurer of SAGE. Jeff was also a two term (8 years) Lake Oswego city councilor. Jeff is a lifelong Oregon resident (except for time at Pomona College and graduate school at the Wharton School of Business). He has been and continues to be actively engaged in a variety of non-profits and government organizations and stays active in the business community.

SUMMARY:Future Design for a Warming Planet: A Multi-Generational Forum
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multi-generational forum titled Future Design for a Warming Climate. \nThis event will explore long-term decision-making through the lens of Future Design\, a method that incorporates the perspectives of imagined future generations. Participants will reflect on Oregon’s past\, engage with a fictional policy concept—the Resiliency Bond\, inspired by real-world climate initiatives—and evaluate its implications from a future-oriented viewpoint. \nBy simulating the voices of future Oregonians\, we’ll test ideas\, deliberate trade-offs\, and reflect on what kind of legacy we want to leave behind. The forum will conclude with a collaborative discussion on actionable steps toward a more resilient future. \nSAGE is pleased to offer this forum in partnership with Elders Action Network and Future Design Group\, SAGE’s Emerging Leaders Action Board\, and Portland State University’s Student Sustainability Center and Institute on Aging.

SUMMARY:Solution Salon – Helping Children and Families
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered why we spend so much time and money on solving homelessness\, yet we still see so many people outside on our streets? Join SAGE and Path Home’s Executive Director Brandi Tuck for a conversation on the history\, causes\, and effects of homelessness. We’ll examine the root causes of homelessness and explore different populations that experience homelessness including the “invisible homeless” population that may be the most vulnerable group but receives the least amount of attention. You’ll also learn what we can do to end the homelessness crisis once and for all.

SUMMARY:Civil Dialogue Across Political Lines
DESCRIPTION:Join us on November 1 for a special event about civil dialogue during contentious political times.\nThe national election is one year out\, and already people are worried about talking politics with friends\, co-workers\, and family members. It doesn’t help that the media and many of our political leaders stoke conflict\, distrust\, and divisions among us. The resulting polarization can leave one wondering if productive conversations with those who don’t share your viewpoint are even possible. \nPanelists Jack Miller\, Rebecca Tweed\, and Wendy Willis will explore this issue and share their views on the state of political discourse in Oregon and nationwide. They’ll also have suggestions about how to have productive conversations across political lines. \nGuests will also have a chance to ask questions and share their thoughts and ideas too. \nNovember 1\, 2023 | 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm (doors open at 4:45 p.m.) | Portland State University \nRegister Here. \n\nMeet our Panelists:\n\n \nRebecca Tweed\nPresident of Tweed Strategies\, Rebecca Tweed is a top political strategist in Oregon and has worked on more than 90 political campaigns for local government\, legislative and statewide candidates\, plus county and statewide ballot measures. She has also served as an Assistant Public Defender for the District of Oregon and a law clerk to Chief Justice Wallace P. Carson\, Jr.\, of the Oregon Supreme Court. \nWendy is the author of two books of poems\, a book of essays\, and the co-author of a text book on collaborative governance. Another textbook – Kitchen Table Democracy – is forthcoming in 2024\, and another book of poems is underway. \n \nJack Miller\nDr. Jack Miller is an author\, professor\, speaker\, and podcaster who has been teaching and writing about politics for more than 30 years. His third novel\, The Silent Majority\, is planned for a 2024 release. Video lectures and public performances are available on his YouTube channel. \n  \n  \n\n \nBill Howe (event moderator)\nBill Howe has practiced law for 47 years\, which includes over 25 years devoted exclusively to family law with Gevurtz Menashe in Portland\, Oregon. SUMMARY:Visiting SAGE: The Future of Community - Featuring David Brooks Presented with Cambia Health Foundation
DESCRIPTION:View a YouTube recording of this past event here >>\nCelebrated writer and social commentator David Brooks spoke about America’s crisis of connection and the need to weave a new\, inclusive social fabric at the 2023 Visiting SAGE. Brooks spotlighted how we can all help shift our culture to value deep relationships and community success over a narrow focus on personal achievement. \nAt this event\, Brooks also spoke with two speakers from Weave: The Social Fabric Project\, which he founded at the Aspen Institute in 2018. Brooks was joined by Frederick Riley\, originally from Saginaw\, Michigan and Dr. S. Renee Mitchell from Portland\, Oregon. Together\, these leaders discussed what it means to weave community in our schools\, our workplaces and in other parts of life. Brooks\, Riley\, and Mitchell shared stories and insights on how we can better know each other\, trust each other\, and break down barriers between us. \n\n“Almost every successful person begins with two beliefs: the future can be better than the present\, and I have the power to make it so.” – David Brooks \n\n\nAbout David Brooks\n\nDavid Brooks is one of the nation’s leading writers and commentators. He is a columnist for The New York Times and appears regularly on PBS NewsHour and Meet the Press. \nHe is the bestselling author of multiple books and a profound observer of the American way of life and domestic and foreign affairs. \nMr. Brooks also teaches at Yale University\, he is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, and the Chair of the Aspen Institute’s Weave project. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAbout Frederick Riley\, Saginaw\, Michigan\n\nFrederick Riley’s hometown was once voted one of the most miserable places to live in the U.S. His childhood memories include food insecurity\, evictions\, and poverty. Yet there were always people at home\, school\, church and in the neighborhood who showed him strength and love. \nHis life was woven together by those people and\, for him\, is a testament to the power of community. He spent much of his career lifting up young adults through community programs at YMCAs around the country. \nNow he leads the Aspen Institute’s Weave: The Social Fabric Project\, which connects and supports the people building trust within their communities and weaving a strong\, inclusive social fabric. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAbout Dr. S. Renee Mitchell\, Portland\, Oregon\n \nAfter a career as a reporter and later as an award-winning columnist for The Oregonian newspaper\, Dr. S. Renee Mitchell quit journalism to focus on her art\, which she says saved her life and reconnected her to her purpose. \n“I have survived poverty\, depression\, sexual assault\, domestic violence\, racial trauma\, bullying and other heartbreaks. However\, each time I create art\, I move further away from the pain that at one point made me think about ending my life.” \nShe later became a teacher and founded I Am M.O.R.E. (Making Ourselves Resilient Everyday) to help students\, community members\, and teachers heal from trauma through profound love\, art\, and skill building. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\n\nEvent Details \n\nSeptember 27\, 2023\nDoors open at 5:45 p.m.\nEvent starts at 6:30 p.m.\nPost Event Reception for Special Admission ticket holders at 8:00 p.m.\nFirst Congregational Church\, 1126 SW Park Ave\, Portland\, Oregon \n\nAdmission \n\nGeneral Admission Ticket: $25 per person (limited number remaining)\nDue to significant demand\, we are also now offering a $10 Simulcast Ticket so you can view the event online. SUMMARY:SAGE Political Power Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to change the law or create a new one? \nJoin us on March 13 for a practical\, hands-on workshop\, offered by Professor Jim Moore on the source and balance of political power. \nIn our democracy\, the source of power is you. The balance of power is shared across five levels of government – local\, regional\, state\, national and international. Each level of government has authority to address issues you care about\, but it’s often difficult to know which ones you should you approach and how to advance your political cause. \nDr. Moore is an expert on the structure of government and the levers of power to change existing laws and to create new ones. He is the Director of Political Outreach for the Tom McCall Center for Civic Engagement at Pacific University. He is also a renowned speaker and authority on politics and has been interviewed more than 7\,500 times for local and national media. \nDr. Moore will help us better understand our federalist structure of government. Using real\, contemporary political issues\, he will illustrate which governments have authority to address which social causes\, and help you identify where you might be most effective when you advocate for your cause. \nNote: Registration deadline is March 11 for this in-person event! \nAbout our speaker:\nDr. Moore serves as the Director of Political Outreach for the Tom McCall Center for Civic Engagement at Pacific University. He teaches a variety of courses at Pacific on local\, state\, national and international policy.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on September 23 for a thought-provoking presentation on how to understand and recognize the potential impacts of implicit biases on ourselves and our approaches to supporting social causes. \nImplicit biases are related to the ways in which people naturally process information about the world around them. Even so\, they can lead us to relate to others in ways that are inconsistent with our values\, such as by judging people based on their age\, ability\, social status\, culture\, gender\, language\, or race. \nDuring this live\, one-hour\, online presentation\, Professor Erik Girvan will draw on illustrations and lessons from social science research and a variety of work contexts to explain how having implicit bias is part of the human condition. Girvan will also describe practical and constructive approaches for reducing or eliminating the main ways that biases can prevent us from living up to our ideals. \nSAGE is pleased to sponsor this event through our Citizen Project\, our initiative to inspire\, support\, and equip people to work across differences to solve public problems. Special thanks to our co-sponsor: Classroom Law Project. \nFor lawyers who attend\, we are applying for 1 hour of MCLE Access to Justice credit. \nIf you have any trouble registering\, contact SAGE at Hello@WeAreSage.org or call 971-717-6570. We are happy to help! \nOur Featured Speaker\nProfessor Girvan has a law degree from Harvard University and a PhD in Psychology from the University of Minnesota. He teaches at the University of Oregon School of Law and is an academic expert in design\, implementation\, and evaluation of ways to increase equity in organizations\, as well as conflict and dispute resolution\, and experienced in civil litigation.
